Aesthetic Dermatology for Men in Vienna

A refreshed appearance should still look like you. Many men want to address signs of skin ageing without making a major change to their facial features or expressions. Aesthetic dermatology therefore starts with a medical assessment of the skin, facial anatomy and the treatment goals you have in mind.
Men’s skin and the ageing process
On average, men’s skin is thicker and produces more sebum than women’s skin. Facial muscles, facial hair and volume distribution also differ. With age, collagen, elasticity and subcutaneous fat change. Expression lines, pigmentation, visible vessels and loss of firmness may become more noticeable.
Hormonal changes around menopause can accelerate some aspects of skin ageing in women. The process varies from person to person: sun exposure, smoking, lifestyle, genetics and medical history also play a part. Treatment should be based on the individual skin and facial assessment, rather than gender alone.
Medical consultation and skin analysis
We begin by discussing what concerns you and what you would like to achieve. The medical assessment considers skin type and condition, facial expressions, anatomy and relevant medical factors. If appropriate, standardised images taken with VISIA 3D can support the assessment. They can show features including wrinkles, pores, skin texture, pigmentation, UV spots and redness.
Image analysis complements the medical examination but does not replace a diagnosis. Based on the assessment, we discuss suitable options, possible risks, the expected course of treatment and whether treatment is appropriate at all.
Experience in aesthetic treatments for men
Dr Gábor Bali has a particular interest in men’s skin and aesthetic treatments for men. Prof Berthold Rzany has worked in aesthetic dermatology for many years and addressed the treatment of male patients in specialist publications early on. He is a co-author of The Male Patient in Aesthetic Medicine, a specialist book on male facial anatomy, the ageing process and aesthetic treatments.
Many men prefer a measured, natural-looking result. Treatment planning takes this into account: the aim is to select an option that fits your individual findings and goals while preserving your natural expression.
Which treatments may be considered?
The choice depends on your skin and treatment goals. Not every method is suitable for every person, and combining treatments is not always necessary.
Botulinum toxin for expression lines
Botulinum toxin may be used for selected expression lines, such as those on the forehead, between the eyebrows or around the eyes. Muscle activity, your natural expressions and the movement you want to retain are considered. Dosage and injection points are determined individually.
Hyaluronic acid fillers for volume loss
Hyaluronic acid fillers may be used to soften selected folds or address localised volume loss. For men, careful planning helps preserve the natural facial contour and avoid unwanted changes to facial features. Suitability is assessed during a medical consultation.
Biostimulators
Biostimulators are injectable substances intended to stimulate the body’s own renewal processes. Depending on the product, they may be considered for reduced skin firmness, certain wrinkles or changes in volume. The onset of effect, treatment course and possible risks vary by substance and are discussed with the doctor beforehand.
Skin boosters and skin quality
Skin boosters are injected into the skin and primarily target hydration and skin quality. Depending on the product, the skin may look fresher or smoother. Unlike traditional fillers, the main aim is not to reshape a contour or add targeted volume. The appropriate product and number of sessions depend on your individual assessment. At Derma-Wien we use Redensity 1, among others, as a skin booster.
Laser treatments
Different laser systems may be used for different skin concerns. Derma-Wien uses, among others, Er:YAG, CO₂, Er:Glass, vascular and picosecond lasers. Treatment goals may include pigmentation, redness, visible vessels, acne scars and skin texture. The appropriate procedure depends on the diagnosis, skin type, treatment goal and possible downtime. You can find more under laser treatments.
LaserLift: laser skin tightening
LaserLift is a minimally invasive laser procedure for skin tightening that stimulates the body’s own collagen production. It may be considered for reduced firmness and a more defined contour on the face or body. There is usually no extended downtime. Suitability depends on the treatment area and your individual assessment. During the consultation we also discuss treatment limitations and alternatives.
Laser hair removal for men
Many men find regular shaving a chore, particularly in areas that are hard to reach or grow back quickly. Laser hair removal can reduce hair growth long term. Commonly requested areas include the neck, the beard line on the cheeks and throat, the back, shoulders, chest and abdomen. For the beard line, we agree on the desired contour in advance, as the hair reduction is long-lasting.
If you are prone to razor burn, shaving bumps or ingrown hairs, reducing hair growth may help, as less shaving means less irritation. These problems often affect the neck and beard area. Whether laser treatment is appropriate depends on your skin, and any existing inflammation is assessed by a doctor first.
The genital area can also be treated. For many men this is a sensitive subject. Consultation and treatment take place in a medical setting with appropriate discretion.
Derma-Wien uses a combination of alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers for hair removal. The alexandrite laser is particularly suitable for fair to medium skin types. The Nd:YAG laser works at a greater depth and also allows darker skin types to be treated gently. This means the wavelength and settings can be adapted to your skin, hair and treatment area. How well treatment works depends on factors such as hair colour, skin type and treatment area. Dark hair generally responds better than fair, grey or white hair. Because hairs are in different growth phases, several sessions a few weeks apart are usually needed. Complete hair removal cannot be guaranteed, and occasional top-up sessions may be helpful.
Frequently asked questions
Are aesthetic treatments different for men?
The medical principles are similar, but planning takes facial anatomy, muscle activity, skin findings and treatment goals into account. A standard dose or one-size-fits-all plan is not appropriate.
What is the difference between a skin booster and a filler?
Skin boosters primarily target skin quality and hydration. Fillers are generally used to soften selected folds or restore volume in a specific area. The distinction also depends on the product used.
Can treatments be combined?
Some procedures can be combined or scheduled in stages. The order and timing depend on the treatments and your skin findings, and are decided individually.
Can laser hair removal be performed in the genital area?
Yes, the genital area can be treated if your skin is suitable. Your skin is examined beforehand, and you receive advice on preparation and aftercare. The consultation is discreet and takes place in a medical setting.
Does laser hair removal help with razor burn?
It may reduce symptoms caused by regular shaving, as less shaving is needed. If inflammation or ingrown hairs are pronounced, a doctor first assesses whether laser treatment is suitable.
